Cougars Battle Hard but Fall to Cecil
The Frederick Community College Cougars men's soccer team put together a strong response in their second match of the season but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 loss to Cecil College on Tuesday afternoon. After conceding an early goal in the seventh minute, the Cougars didn't fall flat and fought their way back into the match. Their effort paid off just before halftime when Samuel Mendez hit a rocket from 25 years deep that found the back of the net off an assist from Jason Shairzad, leveling the score at 1-1 and giving the home team a spark of energy.
Unfortunately for Frederick, Cecil answered quickly, retaking the lead right before the midway point. The second half was a much tighter contest, with the Cougars pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Frederick outshot Cecil 10-8 on the day and generated six corner kicks in the second half alone, but despite the pressure, the Cougars could not find the tying goal. Goalkeeper Casey Cutshall recorded three saves to help keep his team within striking distance, while Mendez's attacking presence highlighted a more confident offensive effort for Frederick.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 0-2 on the season but showed notable improvement from their opener. They will aim to build on this effort when they travel on Friday, August 29, at 2:00 PM for a matchup against the Howard Community College Dragons.
