FREDERICK, Md.—Frederick Community College big-man Jacob McIntosh had a number of dominating performances and was a key contributor for the Cougars last season during their remarkable run to the national tournament. This year, he has been sidelined for the better half of the season with an injury, but returned to last year's form on Monday night with a team-high 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead FCC over the Catamounts of Potomac State (WV). Frederick came away with a big Region XX win, holding on after a late run by Potomac State to take home the victory, 65-63. FCC sits at 6-9 overall on the season.
The first half saw two remarkable defensive efforts by both teams. At the 11:30 mark in the first half, the Catamounts led by the score of 6-4. Both teams traded baskets and the largest lead in the first half was three held by FCC at the 6:14 mark with a score of 16-13. At the half, the Catamounts held the advantage, 23-21. Turnovers (13) and cold shooting (7/25) plagued Frederick in the first 20 minutes of action. The same was true for Potomac State, as a physical Cougar defense kept them in check. McIntosh contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds in the first half to lead Frederick. Keon Claiborne had a solid performance in the first period with five points and six rebounds.
In the second half, both teams started early as each scored on their opening possession. FCC found its flow offensively and figured out how to create better scoring opportunities against the Potomac State zone defense. The Cougars gained the lead at 13:46 left in the game, 32-29. From there, the Cougars extended its lead to 15 at the 8:17 mark, 48-33. Five consecutive poor possessions by the Cougars led to the Catamounts cutting into the lead. With only a minute left in the contest, Potomac State only trailed by three points, 62-59. Thankfully, freshman Marlon White was able to hit three out of four free throws during the last minute, and a desperation three at the buzzer was blocked by Shane DeCellis to seal the win for the Cougars, 65-63.
Keon Claiborne finished with another strong performance for the Cougars in the win, finishing with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and six assists. Tyre Gathright added 10 points. Anthony Issac added eight rebounds.
The Cougars return to action Wednesday night at home in a conference match-up against Howard Community College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
