Cougars Bounce Back Strong Against VFMC For First Win Of The Season

Frederick, Md. - Frederick Community College (1-1) got off to a fast start from the opening tip when Keith Claiborne connected with Anthony Isaac for an alley-oop to start off the game. The Cougars had an early 6-0 lead and continued to build a strong first half led by Tyre Gathright and freshman Marlon White. Gathright sizzled the nets early from the field connecting on his first three shots, including two deep balls from beyond the arc. White entered the game as a zone- buster and did just that connecting on his first three triples.

FCC ended the half by connecting on eight three-point shots. Sophomore Stacy Gipson continued his high energy for the Cougars by contributing seven points, four rebounds, and three block shots. A strong first half effort by the Cougars had the home team leading by 20 points (49-29) heading into the locker room for halftime. Back-up point guard Nygel Blake contributed to a strong first-half effort by pumping in five points, two steals, and two assists.

The second half started off a little slow for FCC as Valley Forge went on their own 7-0 run to cut the lead to just 13 points. That is when Gathright continued his hot hand and knocked down a couple of shots to help the Cougars regain their 20 point lead. From there, FCC led by no less than 13 points the rest of the way and came up with their first victory of the 2016-17 season by defeating Valley Forge, 78- 64.

Kudos to the FCC bench who were especially strong in this contest, contributing 42 points and collecting over 20 rebounds. Tyre Gathright finished with a game-high 22 points. Sophomore Keith Claiborne added seven assists and sophomore Anthony Isaacs added seven rebounds in the victory. Teammate Stacy Gipson put up quite the stat line coming off the bench to score nine points, grab seven rebounds, and three denials in the paint.

Two freshmen came up big for FCC off the bench. Cyree Dunnell dropped in 12 points and collected three rebounds while sharp-shooting freshman Marlon White knocked down four three-pointers to finish with 12 points and three boards.

The Cougars will return to the hardwood next weekend as they take part in the Monroe Community College Mixer. FCC will play NJCAA #14 Richard Bland on Saturday (11/12) at 2:00 PM and #4 Essex County College on Sunday (11/13) at noon.
