Cougars Sweep Skipjacks at The Rick
The Frederick Community College baseball team swept Chesapeake College in a Region 20 Division II doubleheader to continue a strong push toward the postseason. Behind explosive offense and steady pitching, the Cougars claimed a 15–4 win in Game 1 and followed with a convincing 10–1 victory in Game 2. The sweep improved FCC's record to 28–11 overall and 18–4 in Region 20 play, keeping the Cougars firmly in contention as the regular season enters its final stretch.
The opener quickly turned into an offensive showcase for Frederick. After Chesapeake struck first with a two-run homer in the top of the first, the Cougars responded immediately. A big first inning swung the momentum back to FCC, punctuated by a three-run home run from Casey Westerberg, part of a stretch in which Frederick scored 12 runs over the first two innings. Cole Swinimer, Vincenzo Cusat, Jack Clarke, and Kellan Smith all connected on home runs as the Cougars capitalized on patient at-bats, drawing 10 walks. Westerberg delivered a huge performance at the plate, driving in five runs, while Smith added three RBIs to fuel the rout. On the mound, Evan Hassinger settled in after the rocky first inning, going the distance and earning the win by limiting Chesapeake to four runs over five innings.
Game 2 saw Frederick pair timely hitting with dominance on the mound. The Cougars struck first again, scoring in the opening inning, and steadily built their lead while keeping Chesapeake in check. After the visitors briefly tied the game in the second inning, FCC answered with a three-run frame. Clayton Dorsey had a standout afternoon, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Cusat continued his productive day with a two-run home run in the sixth that put the game out of reach. Ethan Duff anchored the effort on the hill, turning in a complete-game performance with eight strikeouts and allowing just three hits.
FCC will be back at The Rick Monday afternoon, April 27, hosting Anne Arundel Community College for a 1:00 PM doubleheader. With eight Region 20 Division II games remaining before postseason play begins May 9, the Cougars are focused on finishing strong and positioning themselves for a deep run in the playoffs.
