The Lady Cougars gave the massive crowd filling the FCC Athletics Center a season opening game to remember as they took on Potomac State College of WV Thursday evening. A five set match to start the season showed the depth and strength of the Frederick offense. After dropping the first two sets to Potomac State, the Cougars charged back in a 25-16 victory in set three that gave them the fuel they needed into game four. Frederick remained an offensive force taking the fourth set 25-21 and tying the match at 2-2. In a back and forth battle, the Cougars ultimately fell to the Catamounts in game five, 18-16.
Sophomore Emily Rabat proved to be an unstoppable force for the Lady Cougars earning a match high of 20 kills. Rabat also tallied four service aces and 13 digs. Three followed with seven kills a piece including local standout and freshman Amy Gust, returning sophomore Colleen Weant, and freshman Erica Buls. Weant also added four blocks. Returning in the libero position, Victoria Ketner tallied 13 digs for the Cougar defense. Freshman setter, Victoria Bryant ran the offensive charge and contributed 37 assists on the night.
"We showed our strength and conditioning tonight and never gave up. Potomac State is a solid program that gave our team a challenging first match," said Coach Rippeon. "We will see them again this season and know exactly where we need to be when we do. The girls played incredibly well together and I know I am very excited to see what the future has in store for this program in the 2015 season."
The Cougars return to the court for another Region XX match with CCBC Essex on Tuesday September 8th, who will also be Frederick's first MD JUCO opponent of the 2015 season. The match will be played at Frederick and first serve is slated for 7:00pm.
