Cougars Split First Day of Quarterfinals, Force Decisive Game Three
Frederick Community College battled through a dramatic day in La Plata against College of Southern Maryland, splitting the first two games of their best-of-three Region 20 Division II Tournament series and setting up a winner-take-all showdown.
In game one, the Cougars struggled to generate offense against a strong pitching performance from CSM, managing just three hits as the home team capitalized on timely hitting to secure an 8-0 victory. Frederick was solid defensively, but a big middle innings surge from Southern Maryland proved to be the difference.
The Cougars responded in game two, as Ava Yockelson provided the key moment in the second inning with a two-RBI single that gave Frederick an early lead, and the Cougars made it stand behind a dominant outing from Alondra Sidock. The sophomore controlled the game from the circle, allowing just one run over seven innings while working efficiently and limiting scoring chances. Frederick's defense backed her up throughout, preserving the narrow lead and forcing a decisive third game.
With the series tied, the Cougars now turn their focus to Sunday's winner-take-all matchup that will be played at noon, where a trip to the Region 20 DII Softball Final Four at WVU Potomac State awaits.
