Cougars Battle No. 3 Mercer for 60 Minutes Before Falling Late at Home

Frederick Community College men's soccer stood toe-to-toe with undefeated Mercer County Community College Vikings for more than an hour Saturday before the Vikings broke through for three second-half goals to hand the Cougars a 3-0 defeat at home. Behind an inspired effort from goalkeeper Casey Cutshall — who turned away 12 shots — Frederick kept Mercer's high-powered attack off the board through the opening 60 minutes. The Cougars managed three attempts of their own, including a quality look from Fabian Alcarraz Espinoza, but couldn't find the breakthrough.

The #3 nationally ranked team in the country, Mercer, finally opened the scoring in the 61st minute and added two insurance tallies in the closing stages. Despite the loss, the Cougars' back line and midfield showed grit and persistence against one of the nation's top teams, frustrating the visitors and keeping the game scoreless into the second half. With the setback, the Cougars drop to 1-6-1 overall and will look to regroup quickly when they travel to face the College of Southern Maryland on Tuesday, September 23, at 2:00 PM.
