Late 2nd half surge not enough as Cougars fall 83-69 to Raptors
FREDERICK, Md. - FCC entered today's contest against the Raptors of Montgomery Community College hoping to extend their winning streak and pick up a big MD JUCO victory. A sluggish first half start saw the Cougars scored only 23 pointed while committing 11 turnovers as the Raptors defeated the Cougars by the score of 83-69.
The Raptors started the game on a 5-0 run, but by the 13:00 mark in the first half, the Cougars had a competitive game on their hands as they were only down three by the score of 16-13. Over the next eight minutes, Montgomery College built a 21-point lead at the 5:25 mark left in the first half. A combination of careless turnovers and the Raptors second chance opportunities doomed Frederick in the first half. Montgomery led 44-23 at the break.
At halftime, the Cougars knew they would need to cut the deficit in half by the ten minute mark if they were going to make a run of their own. FCC started to heat up from beyond the arc led by Marlon White, Tyree Gathright, and Cyree Dunnell. The trio got the Cougars within nine points with 4:58 to play. The Raptors countered the Cougars run by extending the lead back out to 15 points with three minutes left in the game. Two of Dunnell's 3-point field goals were back to back and got the Cougars back into a single digit deficit, 76-67 with just 1:11 left to play. Frederick was forced to foul and the Raptors stepped to the line and missed both, but Frederick failed to grab the rebound and Montgomery would convert to seal the victory.
Dunnell led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points. Teammate Tyre Gathright finished with 13 points. Marlo White finished with 12 points before fouling out of the contest. FCC point guard Keith Claiborne dished out eight assists in the loss while Anthony Isaac added nine rebounds.
FCC returns to the hardwood on Wednesday (1/25) when they host Garrett Community College with tip-off set for 7:00 PM. Friday, the Cougars will travel to Prince George's Community College for a 7:00 PM contest.
