Cougars Downed MC Raptors Two Different Ways for DH Sweep
The Frederick Community College Cougars baseball put together a complete day at the ballpark in Frederick, sweeping Montgomery College in a doubleheader to improve to 19-9 overall and 10-4 in Region 20 Division II play.
Game 1, which lasted a total of 65 minutes, was a statement from the first inning as Frederick's offense erupted early and never let up in a 10-0 run-rule victory. Cole Swinimer set the tone with a pair of home runs and three hits, while Tysan Gingerich added a home run and two RBIs and Vincenzo Cusat added a home run, double, and three RBIs to fuel a lineup that piled up 10 runs on 10 hits. Tysan Gingerich also went deep, and Andrew Varga and Luis Perez Alfaro each chipped in extra-base hits as the Cougars scored in bunches. On the mound, Evan Hassinger (5-2) was dominant, allowing just one hit over five shutout innings while striking out seven to secure the win.
Game 2 presented a much tighter battle, but Frederick got on the board late to complete the sweep with a 2-1 victory. After being held scoreless through five innings, the Cougars finally broke through in the sixth when Tysan Gingerich delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game. In the seventh, Riley Anderson came through with the go-ahead RBI single, scoring Andrew Varga and giving Frederick the lead for good. Ethan Duff (4-1) delivered a strong complete game on the mound, scattering four hits and allowing just one run while striking out eight to keep Montgomery off balance all afternoon.
The sweep showcased Frederick's ability to win in different ways, blending explosive offense in Game 1 with timely hitting and solid pitching in Game 2, as they continue to build momentum ahead of their upcoming home doubleheader against Cecil College on Sunday, April 12, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
