Frederick Community College Names Darien Wingate Head Coach of Cougars Women’s Basketball Program

Frederick Community College Department of Athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Darien Wingate as the new head coach of the Cougars women's basketball program.

"Darien Wingate was the right choice to lead our women's basketball program because of his proven ability to build competitive, disciplined teams while prioritizing the total development of his student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Rodney Bennett. "Throughout the search process, his vision, energy, and commitment to creating a strong culture stood out clearly."

Wingate arrived in Frederick after serving as the Associate Head Men's Coach at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, TX, last season, and prior to that served as the head women's basketball coach at Southwestern Community College from August 2022 to May 2025. During his tenure, he led the program's development both on and off the court, emphasizing player growth, academic success, and a strong team culture.

Prior to his time at Southwestern, Wingate spent the 2021–22 season as an assistant coach at Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tennessee. While there, he oversaw strength and conditioning, coordinated individual player development workouts, and supported student-athlete academic success. He also assisted with recruiting, scouting, and overall program operations.

Wingate also brings experience from Penn State Wilkes-Barre, where he served as an assistant men's basketball coach for five seasons. During that span, he helped guide the program to 95 wins, including a 62-24 conference record. His contributions helped produce six All-Americans, two Newcomers of the Year, seven all-conference selections, a Defensive Player of the Year, and a USCAA National Tournament MVP.

Wingate said he is eager to bring his experience and energy to Frederick Community College and build a competitive, student-centered program.

"At the college level, it is crucial to provide a healthy, balanced environment for student-athletes to thrive and develop as they move on to the next stage of their lives," Wingate said. "Accountability, empathy, integrity, and hard work are key elements to a successful team, in my eyes. These are the qualities that will be instilled in every individual member of the program. This will allow us to come together as a whole and reach the goals we set for ourselves."

"There are so many reasons I'm honored and excited to become the next Head Coach at FCC, but what excites me most is the opportunity to build a championship-level culture and create an environment that high level student-athletes want to be a part of," Wingate added. "We plan to hit the ground running in every aspect of the program—recruiting, player development, academics, culture, and importantly, winning."

"Under his leadership, I expect the program to be defined by accountability, competitiveness, and a strong sense of purpose—both on the court and in the classroom," Bennett said. "Darien brings a clear plan for developing a program that competes at a high level while fostering a positive and supportive team environment."

Wingate began his coaching career in 2015 and played collegiately at Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice.
