Cougars Sweep Vermont State - Johnson at Fastpitch Dreams Tournament
The Frederick Community College Cougars softball bounced back after their opening day to deliver a dominant performance on Tuesday, February 24, sweeping a doubleheader against Vermont State - Johnson to improve to 2-2 at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Training Tournament. The Cougars combined timely hitting with strong pitching to secure an 8-0 shutout in Game 1 before erupting for a 17-3 win in Game 2.
In the opener, Frederick set the tone early and never looked back. Alondra Sidock was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits and striking out nine. The Cougars jumped ahead in the first inning and used a four-run second to break the game open. Leo Cline provided the biggest swing of the afternoon with an inside-the-park home run, finishing with three runs scored and two RBIs. Ava Yockekson went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Brooke Renninger added key production with an RBI, two stolen bases, and solid work behind the plate. Frederick capitalized on pressure and defense, playing error-free softball to close out the five-inning victory.
In game 2, the Cougars' offense piled up 19 hits and scored in every inning but one. After Vermont State – Johnson answered Frederick's early runs in the first, the Cougars seized control with a four-run second and a six-run third. Leo Cline continued her standout day, driving in six runs with three hits, including a triple, while Alyvia Shew turned in a huge performance by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and a double. Addison Custer, Madison Ohler, and Brooke Renninger all recorded multi-hit games. In the circle, Raegan Miller and Ava Yockekson combined to limit the Badgers to three runs, with Yockekson earning the win in relief.
With the sweep, Frederick Community College heads into a day off in Myrtle Beach but will return to action on Thursday, February 26, when they face Fayetteville Technical Community College in their next doubleheader, scheduled for 12 PM. The Cougars' home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, against WVU Potomac State College, with the DH starting at 3 PM.
