Frederick Falls Short in Region 20 Battle at Westmoreland
Frederick Community College men's basketball went toe-to-toe with the Westmoreland County Community College Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon but came up just short in an 89–86 overtime loss on the road on February 14. The Cougars trailed 41–34 at the half before delivering a strong second-half response, outscoring Westmoreland 44–37 after halftime. Despite the rally, Frederick could not take the lead in overtime, which turned into a tightly contested Region 20 Division II matchup.
Sophomore Cameron Canty turned in one of the most dominant individual performances of the season, pouring in 35 points while pulling down 24 rebounds, repeatedly giving Frederick extra possessions and keeping the Cougars within striking distance. Kylan Johnson added 21 points and six assists, knocking down four three-pointers. Elijah Palmer chipped in 11 points with steady play on both ends, while Thierry Patchou contributed nine points. As a team, Frederick shot 45.3 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 41–40, but missed opportunities at the free-throw line and timely Westmoreland baskets in the closing minutes proved costly.
The loss drops the Cougars to 12–12 overall and 5–7 in Region 20 DII play, with one final opponent remaining in the regular season. Frederick now turns its focus back home to host the Prince George's Community College Owls on Saturday, February 21, at 2 PM. The game will also serve as Sophomore Day, giving the Cougars an opportunity to honor their sophomore class as they look to finish the season strong at home.
