Frederick Falls to Highlands Despite Strong Effort at Home

Frederick Community College men's basketball was unable to overcome Pennsylvania Highlands Community College on Wednesday evening, falling 84–69 at FCC to move to 7–6 on the season. The Cougars battled throughout the night, but a decisive second-half surge by the visiting Blackbears proved to be the difference.

Pennsylvania Highlands held a slim 33–25 lead at halftime after Frederick struggled to find consistency offensively in the opening 20 minutes. The Blackbears controlled the glass early and turned second-chance opportunities into points, while Frederick relied heavily on perimeter shooting to stay within reach. Kylan Johnson paced the Cougars in the first half and finished with a team-high 17 points, knocking down four three-pointers while adding five rebounds, four assists, and five steals in an active two-way performance.

The Blackbears extended their advantage after the break, scoring 51 points in the second half and consistently pressuring Frederick's defense. Byron Lavender led all scorers with 22 points, while Victor Raymond was dominant inside with 19 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, helping Pennsylvania Highlands out-rebound Frederick 57–32 for the game. Despite the deficit, the Cougars continued to compete, with Gabriel Jones adding 10 points and Ryan Tientcheu providing a lift off the bench with eight points, including strong finishes around the basket.

Frederick generated 11 three-pointers and forced 22 turnovers, but shooting efficiency and rebounding ultimately swung the game. The Cougars shot 34.7% from the field and were unable to capitalize consistently at the free-throw line.

Frederick will look to regroup and defend home court when it welcomes Baltimore City Community College to the Athletics Center on Saturday, January 10, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
