Late Rally Lifts Cougars to Doubleheader Sweep of CCBC

Frederick Community College Cougars Baseball put an emphatic stamp on their final home doubleheader of the 2026 regular season, sweeping CCBC Catonsville with wins of 5–0 and 5–4. The victories pushed FCC to 31–12 overall and 21–5 in Region 20 Division II play, further solidifying their place among the top teams in the Region 20 DII as the postseason approaches.

Game one belonged to the Cougars from the mound outward. Right-hander Evan Hassinger was dominant, spinning a complete-game one-hitter across seven scoreless innings while striking out seven Cardinals. Catonsville managed just a single hit and never advanced a runner into a serious scoring position as Hassinger calmly controlled the pace. Frederick broke through in the bottom of the third inning, when Luis Perez Alfaro delivered a two-run single that ignited a four-run frame. Casey Westerberg and Braydon Kelman followed with RBI contributions in the inning, giving FCC a cushion that felt even larger with the way Hassinger was dealing. Andrew Varga added an RBI single in the fourth to account for the final margin, as the Cougars turned six hits and aggressive baserunning into a clean 5–0 shutout on their home field.

The second game provided the kind of drama that has come to define the Cougs. Andrew Varga set the tone in the first inning with a solo home run to left, and Perez Alfaro made it back-to-back games with a long ball by going deep in the fourth. CCBC answered with a two-run fifth and briefly took the lead in the sixth, pressing Frederick late into the afternoon. The Cougars responded in their half of the sixth as Riley Anderson drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, Jack Clarke lifted a sacrifice fly to put FCC in front, and Varga was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to add an insurance run. Matthew Calabrese shut the door to pick up the save and secure the sweep.

Frederick now turns its attention to the final doubleheader of the regular season, traveling to the College of Southern Maryland on Sunday, May 3, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
