Frederick Community College Athletics Mourns the Passing of Hall of Fame Coach Dave Miller
Frederick Community College Athletics is deeply saddened by the passing of former men's basketball head coach and FCC Athletics Hall of Famer (Class of 2016) Dave Miller, who passed away Wednesday morning following a brief battle with cancer.
Dave graduated from Edinboro University in 1968, where he was a four-year basketball letterman and served as co-captain his senior year. His coaching career began shortly after graduation and spanned more than four decades. He spent 25 years as a high school coach in Maryland—first at Poolesville High School (1968–69 to 1980–81) and then at Walkersville High School (1981–82 to 1992–93), where he also taught for 23 years. Under his leadership, Walkersville captured Maryland State Championships in 1984 and 1986 and earned Area Top 10 rankings for 12 consecutive seasons. His overall high school coaching record was an impressive 353-212.
In 1993, Dave took the helm as Head Coach of the Frederick Community College Cougars men's basketball program, guiding the Cougars for 20 seasons (1993–94 to 2012–13). During his tenure, he compiled a record of 347-233, led his teams to 19 Region 20 Tournament appearances, and earned Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and 2010.
"Coach Miller was an FCC icon—a tremendous mentor, coach, and friend," said Rodney Bennett, Director of Athletics at Frederick Community College. "Our hearts go out to his wife, Lois, and his family. He touched generations of people and will be deeply missed."
Dave's contributions to the sport were widely recognized. He was inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the Alvin G. Quinn (Frederick) Hall of Fame in 2003, Mercer County (PA) Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, Sharon (PA) High School Hall of Fame in 2015, and Poolesville (MD) High School Hall of Fame in 2015.
At the time of his passing, Coach Miller was in his 13th season on the Shippensburg University men's basketball coaching staff, having joined the Raiders in 2013 when head coach Chris Fite was hired.
FCC extends its heartfelt condolences to Lois Miller, his wife of more than 55 years, and to his family and friends. Dave is survived by his son Brian, daughter-in-law Tina, and two grandchildren, Bryce and Jordyn.
