FREDERICK, Maryland – The Frederick Community College softball team swept a doubleheader from Harford CC on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 12-0 and 13-0. The story of the day was the pitching performance by Rachel Benden of FCC. She struck out 16 batters in game one and had a heck of a day at the plate. She went 5-for-6 in the DH, including two homers. The Cougars sit at 7-5 overall on the season, including 4-0 in conference action.
What an unbelievable performance in the circle and at the dish for FCC's Rachel Benden (2-1). She pitched a complete game shutout and gave up just one hit while striking out 16 batters in the shortened six-inning game.
If that wasn't enough, Benden went 3-for-4 at the dish and knocked in four runs. One of her hits was a long ball. Kaitlyn Naill smashed a homer and went 2-for-4 in the win and tallied three RBIs. Whitney Dickerson recorded a pair of hits and RBIs along with teammate Lindsey Thomas who went 2-for-4 as she joined in on the hit parade. The Cougars tallied 13 hits in the win.
Kaitlyn Naill (1-1) didn't allow a single run against the Fighting Owls, throwing a complete game shutout, leading the Cougars to a 13-0 victory on Wednesday.
Naill led FCC at the dish by driving in five runs. She went 3-for-3 at the plate, including two homers and five RBIs. Rachel Benden (2-for-2) hit a solo homer in the first inning to get the offense going.
The Cougars notched eight runs in the second inning. The offensive firepower was led by Taylor Beckley, Kayla Green (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, 2 R), Naill, Whitney Dickerson, and Carley Poff, who all drove in runs.
Naill was credited with the victory for FCC. She tossed five innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out nine.
FCC tallied a total of five home runs in the victory. Benden, Naill, Green, and Ryleigh Bolyard all went yard in the first frame. Naill would dial-up another long ball in the second inning.
FCC will return to the diamond on 3/16 vs. College of Southern Maryland at FCC. The first pitch of the DH is set for 3:00 PM.
