Softball Drops Pair in Conference Opener at Cecil

NORTH EAST, Md. – The Frederick Community College softball team traveled to Cecil College on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader to open up MD JUCO conference play. FCC lost both games by the scores of 17-8 (6 innings) and 13-5 (5 innings). With the two losses, FCC drops to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Seahawks move to 2-0 in both overall and conference play.

Game One

The Seahawks jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks in part to a Carly White three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars would claw their way back into the contest as they would put a five spot on the board in the top of the sixth. However, Cecil College would erupt for 9 runs in the bottom of the sixth. The big blows in the top of the sixth came off the bat of Rachel Durham and Olivia Martin for the Seahawks. Durham would double to clear the bases and Martin would seal the victory with a two-run homer.

Kayla Green was a perfect 3-for-3 (2B, 3 R) at the plate for FCC in the loss. Teammate Ashley Bentley smacked a double as the Cougars tallied six hits in game one.

Bentley was hit with the loss and falls to 2-2 on the mound. She was relieved by Whitney Dickerson who gave up nine earned runs in two innings. Errors continue to hurt FCC this season. The Cougars committed six miscues in game one.

Game Two

The Seahawks would jump on the scoreboard early in the second game by scoring 11 runs in the first frame. The deficit was too much for FCC to overcome as they fell 13-5 in five innings.

Katie Shugars and Blair Willis (.368 BA) each went 2-for-2 for the Cougars at the plate. Shugars and Kayla Green (.357 BA) homered as FCC tallied a total of 10 hits in the loss. Willis, Morgan Alder (.346 BA), and Kayleigh Waters each smacked a double.

FCC starting pitcher McKenzie Haynes went just one inning and suffered the loss. She gave up nine hits, resulting in four earned runs. She falls to 0-2 on the season.
