FREDERICK, Maryland – The calendar might still read February, but it sure felt like March Madness as the FCC men's basketball team picked up a huge win on Saturday afternoon over the Skipjacks from Chesapeake College by the score of 80-77. With the win, FCC improves to 12-16 overall, including 7-6 in conference play. The Skipjacks sit at 18-9 overall with a conference record of 7-6.
The contest on Saturday afternoon was a quality college basketball game. Fans were treated to a great game as the two teams battled for the final spot of the Region XX DII postseason tourney next week at Howard CC. With the Cougars clinging to a one point lead with just 10 seconds to go, the Skipjacks had one final possession to take the lead. FCC would play tight defense and force a jumper from beyond the arc that fell short and the Cougars gained possession. Devon Knaub would knock down two free throws to extend the lead to 80-77. The Skipjacks would have one final possession with three seconds remaining, but the shot fell short and the Cougars punch their ticket to the postseason. The official word of seeding of tourney will be announced on Sunday night.
CJ Williams stepped up big for FCC as he continues to shine in his sophomore year. He scored a team-high 21 points. Teammate Domantas Sakickas was a force in the middle. Dom finished with 17 points and controlled the paint all afternoon. AJ Gregory and Christian Knox each recorded 11 points in the win.
