Men's Basketball Extends Win Streak To Five Games!
La Plata, Md. – A tough road test was answered by the FCC men's basketball team as they defeated College of Southern Maryland by the score of 92-91 in a nail-biter. With the victory, the Cougars sit at 7-1 overall on the season, including a perfect record of 3-0 in MD JUCO play.
FCC enjoyed a 50-37 lead heading into the locker room after 20 minutes of action. However the Hawks would storm back and the contest went down to the finals seconds as the Cougars held on for the win. What a crazy last 10 minutes of play. The Cougars had built a 15-point lead and were in the driver's seat. CSM would storm back to make it a game and actually took the lead. With just 17 seconds to play, Burnett was fouled. He missed both free throws and on the second attempt, there was a jump ball in favor of CSM. Burnett would steal the inbound pass and was fouled, returning to the foul line. He connected on one of two attempts. On the inbound the Cougars would force a jump ball, this time in favor of FCC. After a Cougar timeout, Henry Okoye would convert on a lob play and was fouled in the act. He would swish the free throw to put FCC up one point. CSM would have one last attempt with just .8 seconds remaining in the contest, but the Cougars held on for the victory.
Juwan Burnett cracked the starting lineup and led FCC with 20 points. Dwayne Garner was a force in the paint and posted 19 points (5-of-8 FGs) and nine rebounds. David Garey provided a spark off the bench and added 17 points (5-of-8 FGs). Ben Meredith continues his solid sophomore campaign as he scored 16 points.
The Cougars shot 29-of-60 (48.3%) from the field. FCC continues to find their way to the free throw line as they connected on 26-of-36 (72.2%). FCC is currently second in all of NJCAA DII in free throw attempts per game and ranks sixth in free throw percentage at 79%!
FCC will return to the court on 12/1 vs. Genesee Community College (6-0). Tip-off is set for 1:00 P.M. at the Athletics Center on the campus of Frederick Community College.
