Basketball Sends Sophomores Out With Home Win

FREDERICK, Md. - The No. 7 Frederick Community College men's basketball team extended their winning streak to 14 on Wednesday night by defeating College of Southern Maryland by the score of 68-65 on sophomore night. With the victory, the Cougars are 19-2 (10-1 MD JUCO) overall and 5-0 in Region XX D2 play. College of Southern Maryland drops to 10-9 (4-7 MD JUCO) on the year.

As the old saying goes, "It's not how you play the game, its how you finish." Head Coach Emonte Hill and the FCC basketball squad found a way to squeak out a victory over the Hawks. FCC trailed 35-28 at the half and would turn it up a notch in the second half. It wasn't until the nine minute mark in the second half that FCC would take a 52-51 lead.

With a house full of Cougar fans, the final four minutes were very entertaining. FCC would take a 66-64 lead with just 10 seconds remaining. CSM's attempt to tie the contest came up short and the Hawks were forced to foul. FCC's Dashon Bell would head to the charity stripe for the 1-and-1. Bell's first attempt fell short and the Hawks rebounded the miss. With just seven seconds remaining, Keon Claiborne forced a turnover and dished it to Bell for the icing on the cake with a slam. Bell flushed the two-hand slam and then was given a questionable technical foul for hanging on the rim. CSM's Juwan Smith hit one of two free throws and then the Hawks were given the ball trailing 68-65 with just 1.8 seconds left in the contest. The inbound was intercepted by Keon Claiborne to secure the victory.

The sophomore trio of Dashon Bell, Keon Claiborne and Morris Robinson came up big in the clutch. Bell finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Claiborne and Robinson each pumped in 12 points.

FCC continues to turn in quality possessions and get good looks on the offensive end. The Cougars hit on 27-of-50 (54%) in the game. Give credit to FCC Head Coach Emonte Hill using his timeouts wisely throughout the game to set up inbound plays that turned into key buckets at crucial times in the game.

FCC returns to action on Saturday (2/3/18) when they travel to Allegany College of Maryland. Tip-off is set for 3:00 P.M.

Prior to tip-off, the men's basketball program honored the following six sophomores: Morris Robinson, Marlon White Jr., Dashon Bell, Javon Daniels, Keon Claiborne, Kenneth Stancell Jr.
